Origin

The American Hairless Terrier (AHT) is a breed of dogs from the USA. They are decendents of American Rat Terriers. In 1972 there was a litter of pure bred Rat Terriers, with one hairless puppy in it. She was the cornerstone of the American Hairless Terrier breed. They still cross breed Rat Terriers with the American Hairless Terrier, to keep the genepool diverse.The AHT is the only breed that is completely hairless, with the exception of the whiskers. This makes them the ideal pet for people with an allergy for hairs.

Appearance

The American Hairless Terrier is a well muscled breed of dogs of a medium size.
There are only a few of them in Holland. Their head is wide, wedge-shaped and in the right proportion to the body. The nose is black or colored in the same color as the skin.
The tail is thick at the base and thin towards the tip, preferably going upwards.
They have a complete set of well sized, equally placed teeth The eyes can be of any color, as long as they fit the skin color.
Hazel colored eyes are only ccepted when the skin color is light.
Blue and amber colored eyes are only accepted with Blue and Pearl colored dogs.
The ears have an upsidedown V shape, set at the outside edges of the skull, and preferably be erect, but tipped ears are also accepted.
The ideal proportioned AHT has got a body length that is longer than the body height The height should be between 18 to 40 cm, with a weight between 2.5 to 7 kg. The skin feels soft and warm to the touch.
Various colors are allowed, such as:
Black, Chocolate, Red, Apricot, Pearl and Blue. The skin usually has multiple colors, with one color as a base. Spots and freckles are of a contrasting color.
Freckles may enlarge with age, and skin color will darken when exposed to the sun.

Character

The AHT is an agile and playful breed.
They are very intelligent and curious and they are perfect pets.
They like children and get along with cats and other dogs.
Also, they love to work for their humans, which makes them perfect for agility.
